425 yards fingering weight yarn
Size 2 needles, or size needed to maintain gauge
Gauge 7 stitches per inch in pattern
Pattern is written for adult woman
This pattern is intended to take advantage of the pooling that occurs with hand painted sock yarns.
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: *Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back, K 3*
Cast on 64 stitches, distributed evenly over 4 needles and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. Work in K1, P1 rib for 1 ½ “, then work in pattern for 8 inches, ending after a Row 1. Slip the stitches from needle 2 onto needle 1, so needle 1 has 32 stitches on it.
Heel Flap Row 1: Sl 1, K 1 across needle 1.
Heel Flap Row 2: Purl across needle 1.
Work these two rows on the heel flap stitches until the flap is square, ending after a heel flap row 2.
Turn the Heel: K 19, SSK, K1 and turn your work, leaving 10 stitches unworked. Next Row: Purl 8 stitches, P 2 tog P1 and turn your work, leaving 10 stitches unworked. Next Row: Knit to the stitches before and after the gap and SSK those 2 stitches together, K1 and turn your work. Purl to the stitches before and after the gap, P2 tog, P1 and turn your work. Continue in this fashion until all stitches have been worked.. Knit 1 row even. Divide the remaining heel stitches onto 2 needles. The round now begins in the center of the heel stitches.
Gusset Pick up: Pick up and knit 15 stitches along the edge of the heel flap, work across the instep stitches (now needles 2 and 3) in pattern (you should be on pattern row 2), pick up and knit 15 stitches along the remaining heel flap edge.
Gusset Decrease Round: On needle 1, Knit to 3 stitches before the end, K2 tog, K1; work across needles 2 and 3 in pattern; on needle 4 K1, SSK, k to end.
Next Round work even, maintaining pattern across instep. Repeat these two rounds until 64 total stitches remain. Continue working the pattern across the instep stitches and the bottom in stockinette, until the foot is 1 1/2” short of the total desired foot length. Toe decrease round as follows:
Needle 1: K1, SSK, Knit across
Needle 2: Knit to 3 stitches from the end, K 2 tog, K1
Needle 3: K1, SSK, Knit across
Needle 4: Knit to 3 stitches from the end, K 2 tog, K1
Next Round work even.
Repeat these two rounds until 8 stitches remain on each needle, then work the decrease round every round until 4 stitches remain on each needle. Cut the working yarn, leaving about 12” tail and thread it onto a tapestry needle. Arrange the top stitches on needle 1 and the bottom stitches on needle 2 and kitchener closed. With the working yarn on the right hand end of the back needle, go through the first stitch on the front needle purlwise and leave it on the needle, then knitwise into the first stitch on the back needle and leave it on. Go in the first stitch on the front needle knitwise and take it off the needle, then into the next stitch on the front needle and leave it on. Go into the first stitch on the back needle as if to purl and take it off, into the next stitch on the back needle as if to knit and leave it on. Continue until all stitches have been worked twice and taken off the needles, weave in the end.
